Expressing discontent that the Indian education system was still under “colonial influence’, former Vice Chancellor of Karnataka State Law University J.S. Patil stressed on the need for radical reforms.
He was delivering the keynote address at a function organised to mark the 10th anniversary of Government First Grade Degree College and Post-Graduate Centre here on Monday.
“Only radical reforms in the entire education system, right from the primary level to higher education, so as to restructure and reorient it to reflect the local dynamics and address the issues of the land can put the nation on to the fast track of development,” he said.
New universities
Pointing at the need of trifurcating Gulbarga University, Mr. Patil said that educational institutions in Bidar and Raichur need to be carved out to form Bidar University and Raichur University respectively. This is the only way to reduce the burden of parent university, but also help educationally develop the entire Hyderabad Karnataka region.
“With 480 colleges under its fold, Gulbarga University is struggling hard to manage. It is time to form two more universities for the region. Raichur post-graduate centre at Yeragera has sufficient land for establishing a university campus. Colleges in Yadgir and Raichur districts could be part of Raichur University,” he suggested.
He commended Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil for his zeal to educationally transform the backward region and recalled his contributions for the development of Yeragera post-graduate centre.
“Gulbarga University Vice Chancellor S.R. Niranjana and members of University Academic Council requested the Deputy Commissioner to allocate some funds for the development of the postgraduate centre. The officer visited the spot, took stock of the ground realities and released funds within a short time. He is very keen on changing poor educational scenario of the region and we must make use of his fervour,” he said.
MLA Shivaraj Patil, MP B.V. Naik, Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil, CMC president Hemalatha Budeppa, Academic Council member of Gulbarga University Razak Ustaad, college principal Patil Mahipal Reddy, and cultural convenor of the college Dastagirsab Dinni were present.
