The Election Commission on Friday sought the response of V.K. Sasikala and T.T.V. Dinakaran to a petition filed by the O. Panneerselvam group requesting allotment of the AIADMK’s ‘two leaves’ symbol.

“We have sought a reply from Ms. Sasikala and Mr. Dinakaran by March 20 on the petition of E. Madhusudhanan and others,” said an EC official. Mr. Madhusudhanan, a veteran AIADMK leader, has been fielded by the Panneerselvam faction in the byelection to the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency on April 12.

The seat had fallen vacant after former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s death.

A day after an AIADMK delegation urged the Election Commission not to entertain the requests of the dissenting group, the Panneerselvam camp on Friday submitted the petition requesting allotment of the party symbol.

Earlier last week, Mr. Panneerselvam had also met Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi challenging Sasikala’s election as the party’s interim general secretary.
