In view of the forthcoming elections to panchayats and local bodies, the YSR Congress is holding a regional-level meeting of present and past people’s representatives at Vizianagaram on Sunday, party regional coordinator and former MLA Sujay Krishna Ranga Rao has said.

Addressing the media here on Friday, he said that party honorary president Vijayamma would address the meeting. The meeting would draw up the party’s strategy for the forthcoming local body elections, he said. The move to hold a regional meet reflects the importance the party was giving to the local body elections, he added.

“Even though the elections to the panchayats are to be conducted without party symbols, the party is taking it very seriously and making all out efforts to establish itself at the grassroots level democratic institutions,” the former MLA said. The party has already formed booth-level committees in 80 per cent of the places and the balance would be in place soon, he added. The government delayed the elections to the local bodies beyond reasonable time because of which the Centre held back funds for development, he pointed out and hoped that the government would hold the elections as promised at least this time. He flayed the Kiran Kumar Reddy government for influencing the Speaker to delay the decision on disqualification of MLAs to ensure that no by-elections were held for the seats held by them.
