In a keenly contested election in the Nellore MLC Local Authorities Constituency, the Telugu Desam Party defeated the YSR Congress Party by a margin of 87 votes.

The result, declared on Monday, put an end to the hopes of the YSRCP leaders who worked hard to get the support of the MPTCs, ZPTCs and the corporators by appealing to them to heed their conscience.

TDP nominee V. Narayana Reddy secured 465 votes as against 378 polled by YSRCP nominee Anam Vijaykumar Reddy. The valid votes were 843 as against the polled votes of 851.

The YSRCP leaders sought to bring pressure from local contacts and all sources on the voters but the effort could yield marginal result.

In fact, most of these voters actually belonged to the YSRCP but they eventually shifted their loyalties to the TDP. They included many corporators in the Nellore Municipal Corporation, including Mayor Abdul Aziz.

The TDP leadership went all out to secure its voters and also conducted camps to prevent poaching by the Opposition groups.

Silpa wins

Telugu Desam Party MLC Silpa Chakrapani Reddy was re-elected in the Kurnool MLC Local Authorities’ Constituency with a margin of 64 votes over YSR Congress candidate Gauru Venkata Reddy on Monday.

In the prestigiously fought election between the district presidents of the two parties, the TDP emerged victorious. Mr. Venkata Reddy led in the initial rounds until about 700 votes were counted. At one stage, the YSRC was leading by 58 votes.

Of the 1083 votes in the district, 1,077 were polled. Mr. Chakrapani Reddy secured 565 votes and Mr. Venkata Reddy 501. Ten votes were declared invalid. Interestingly, one voter opted for NOTA (None Of The Above).

Leaves no space for YSRC

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has left no space for the Opposition YSR Congress in the biennial elections from the Local Authorities Constituencies (LACs). The TDP won all the nine Council seats, including six seats unopposed.

The Telugu Desam Party nominees defeated YSRC candidates in Kadapa, Kurnool and SPS Nellore LACs, elections for which were held on March 17 and counting was taken up on Monday.

With this, the TDP has won all the nine Council seats from the LACs, having already bagged Srikakulam, East Godavari, West Godavari (two seats), Anantapuramu and Chittoor LACs unopposed.

Former Ministers Satrucharla Vijaya Rama Raju (Srikakulam), Chikkala Ramachandra Rao (East Godavari), sitting MLC Angara Ramamohan and Mantena Satyanarayana Raju (West Godavari), B Rajanarasimhulu alias Dorababu (Chittoor) and Deepak Reddy (Anantapur) were declared elected unopposed in the first week of March.
