: Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao has underscored the need for the effective functioning of various committees in the legislature for ensuring that funds from the public exchequer are not misused.

The Speaker said the committees were accountable to the people in general and the government in particular. He was speaking at the meeting of the representatives of the Public Accounts Committee, Public Undertakings Committee and the Estimates Committee in the Assembly on Monday. Members of the committees complained that the recommendations made by the panels after elaborate studies were not being implemented.

They urged the Speaker to ensure that the recommendations made by the committees were tabled in the House for a debate. The committees should be authorised to hold review meetings with the heads of the departments in the event of the reports not being tabled in the House.

Dr. Sivaprasada Rao assured the members that necessary steps would be initiated in this regard to ensure that the work done by the committees was elaborately discussed and future course of action was chalked out. The committees also requested the Speaker to enhance the allowances being paid to the members.
