Cancer specialists from a host of institutions from United States on Wednesday said that early diagnosis is very important to fight cancer in India. These and several other recent innovations in cancer management will be presented and discussed in the International Cancer Conclave being organised by Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad between February 6 and 8.
“Cancer should be diagnosed early. In the US, success rate of cancer treatment is high because there is a lot of stress on screening and detecting cancers early. Large number of cancers including cervix, colon, head and neck etc. are treatable if detected early hence screening is very important,” says Washington University Chair of Radiation Oncology St. Louis Dennis Hallahan, while interacting with press persons on Wednesday.
Doctors said that MRI guided radiation therapy has brought better results in treating cancers. “MRI guided radiation therapy helps us to visualise tumour in real time during radiation therapy. This improves the ability to focus and deliver the radiation in a focussed manner for better results. The conclave will provide Indian doctors to learn about such new techniques,” said Radiation Oncologist, Scripps Clinics, US, Dr. Prabhakar Tripuraneni.
The conclave is expected to attract over 3,000 oncologists from India and outside. “There has been a lot of advancement in treating cancers in western countries. Robotic surgeries are redefining the way cancer surgeries are done these days. The staying time in hospitals too has reduced for patients. Such innovative cancer management techniques will be discussed in the conclave,” said Apollo Cancer Hospital Director P. Vijay Anand Reddy.
