Announcement likely on transgender policy

March 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - BENGALURU:

The much-awaited policy for transgenders is expected to finally see the light of the day in the State Budget this time. Sources in the Secretariat said that the policy had been finalised after consultation with various departments.

The State government had set up an 11-member sub-committee to frame a policy for transgenders in line with the Supreme Court order in April last year that recognised them as the “third gender.” The objective was to frame measures for the socio-economic development as well as to take care of health, educational, vocational and psychological aspects.

Tara, BJP MLC, had moved a private member’s resolution demanding the announcement of the policy.
