Potential bomber?: A Pakistani police officer interrogates Faiz Mohammad in Karachi on Monday.

A Pakistani national was detained at Karachi airport on Sunday night after electrical circuits and batteries were found in the soles of his tennis shoes. The man, identified as Faiz Mohammad, was bound for Muscat on a Thai Air flight.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the device were used for massaging the feet but since both the circuits and batteries can be put to dual use —particularly in making bombs — the man is still under detention.

Faiz Mohammad has apparently told the police that he had bought the shoes in Karachi and had no clue how the electrical circuits and batteries got implanted in them. The incident has brought to mind the case of the shoe bomber who tried to blow up a Paris-Miami American Airlines flight in December 2001 with bombs hidden in his shoes.
