The Inquiry Commission formed to probe the police firing on July 21, 1993, where 13 Youth Congress activists were killed during a ‘March to Writers’ Building (State Secretariat)’, will submit its report to the West Bengal Government next week.
Justice (retd.) Sushanta Chatterjee who presides over the Commission told The Hindu on Saturday that he is in the process of giving final touches to the report.
“If the work is complete, then I will submit the report on Monday or else positively on Tuesday,” Justice Chatterjee said.
The notification for setting up a commission of inquiry under retired Calcutta High Court Judge Sushanta Chatterjee was issued on November 4, 2011, months after the All India Trinamool Congress came to power in May 2011. The police firing was on Youth Congress supporters led by Mamata Banerjee, who was with the Congress. Since the formation of the AITC, the party observes July 21 as a Martyrs’ Day.
“During these two years the Commission has recorded over 300 public witnesses which includes 40 journalists who were witness to the firing,” Justice Chatterjee said. Former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who was the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister in the Left Front government in 1993 also deposed before the Commission.
