Two days after the shocking footage of a private tutor mercilessly beating a three-and-half-year-old child in Lake Town on the north eastern fringes came to light, the teacher was arrested late on Friday evening from the Rashbehari area.
Pooja Singh was on a run since the incident came to light.
The mother of the child had filed a complaint with the Lake Town police station on Wednesday. The incident had drawn severe criticism and the video captured by the closed-circuit television camera installed in the child's home had gone viral over the internet.
“She was hiding at a relative’s place. Following a tip-off, we arrested her. She will be presented before a court Saturday,” an officer said.
More casesMeanwhile, a school teacher in Howrah district was detained on Friday for allegedly beating up a class VIII student and a class IV student was allegedly roughed up by the mother of a classmate in the city.
The corporal punishment in Howrah was reported in an English medium school. The accused teacher, Jaiprakash Singh, allegedly beat up the minor, who refused to go to school after the assault.
In the city, a nine-year-old was allegedly punched and slapped by the mother of a classmate. The school authorities, including the principal, met the boy at his home and assured strict action.
Organisations working for the rights of children have come out against incidents of corporal punishment.
“CRY sees corporal punishment as a failure of the adult to engage and communicate with the child,” a statement issued by Atindranath Das, Regional Director, CRY East, said.
