A student died of suspected drug overdose here on Sunday, while her room-mate was rushed to the hospital after they were found in an unconscious state in their room.
Post-graduate students of the city’s prestigious Presidency University Sumantika Banerjee and Subarna Lama were found unconscious by the owners of the paying guest house in Muchipara in north Kolkata where they were staying, a relative of Banerjee said.
While Banerjee was declared dead by the doctors in the city’s Medical College and Hospital, Ms. Lama was admitted to in a critical condition.
“Sumantika was not answering her cell phone since morning. Concerned, her parents got in touch with the owners of the paying guest house. The owners broke into their room and found them lying unconscious with foam coming out of their mouths,” Banerjee’s relative said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central division, Devendra Prakash Singh told The Hindu : “Post-mortem of the deceased has been conducted. However, we are awaiting a detailed report. Ms. Lama’s condition is stable now and she is talking to police officials and her family. Their condition began to deteriorate after consuming some food on Saturday, she has said.”
Ms. Lama’s parents have reportedly raised doubts on the incident and alleged it was an attempted murder.
“We are not in a position to comment on the allegation until it is brought to the police’s notice,” Mr. Singh said.
Both the girls hail from North Bengal. Their two other room-mates were away on a vacation.
