Taxi drivers in Kolkata observed a 24-hour taxi strike here on Wednesday.
Led by the Leftist trade union All India Trade Union Congress and the Indian National Trade Union Congress, the strike was called to demand a revision in fares and to protest police ‘excesses’.
The strike comes on a day the 39th International Kolkata Book Fair started its annual 12-day celebration of books in the city at Milan Mela in eastern Kolkata. The footfall is expected to dip during the day due to absence of taxis.
