The CBI probing the multi-crore Saradha scam has summoned Madan Mitra, Transport Minister in the Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet.

The summon comes a few days after the investigation agency submitted its second charge sheet in the scam and arrested Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh who attempted suicide alleging that "real culprits" are roaming freely.

Mr Mitra, who is undergoing treatment in a city hospital, said he would appear before the CBI when his doctor permits him.

The development is crucial as Mr. Mitra was seen at several events of Saradha group and he had praised Saradha chief Sudipta Sen on many occasions.

Mr Mitra’s former personal assistant Bapi Karim had earlier been summoned by the CBI.

Police sources told The Hindu that Mr Mitra “has left enough evidence” like transactions through cheques that may nail him.

The CBI has also summoned Trinamool MP Srinjoy Bose, a top cargo-handler in ports and media tycoon of Eastern India. Both Mr Mitra and Mr Bose have been asked to appear before the agency by the end of the week.

Mr Bose said he has been called by the agency as a witness and he will abide by the order.

He had been summoned earlier also by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate, another Central agency probing the scam.

The CBI has also summoned senior Congress leader Somen Mitra who said he has not yet received any summons.
