A 16-year-old boy bicycling to work on the service road along Marina Beach was run over by a tanker lorry on Friday afternoon. Enraged locals assaulted the lorry driver and damaged the vehicle before staging a road roko demanding the driver’s arrest.

Satish Kumar, a resident of Nochikuppam, worked as a two-wheeler mechanic at a garage in Foreshore Estate. The accident took place around 1.30 p.m. when Satish was heading to work.

“The boy was cycling on the service road behind Santhome Church when the bicycle slipped and he fell on the road. The speeding tanker which was coming from Adyar after unloading petrol ran him over,” said a police officer.

Locals in the area who witnessed the accident assaulted the lorry driver Ilayaraja (24) of Tiruvannamalai and pelted stones at the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody later. Satish Kumar had played a cameo in the Tamil flick Marina , sources said.
