A 60-year-old woman died when the staircase in her rented house collapsed on Wednesday morning.

Police said, the victim, N. Prema (60), lived with her son, N. Sankar, on Ammaiyappan Street in Pulianthope. On Wednesday around 6 a.m., Prema was climbing the staircase from the ground floor to the terrace, when it collapsed. She fell amid the concrete and rubble and sustained severe injuries. She was rushed to hospital where she was declared ‘brought dead’.

Police said the 50-year-old house was dilapidated, and had been in poor condition for over a decade. A case has been registered.

The owner A. Rani told police that a few months ago, she had asked Prema and her son to leave the house because of its condition but they had not done so.
