Four held for Urapakkam panchayat president’s murder

February 20, 2014 02:43 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:34 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Four men have been detained in connection with the murder of U.K. Perumal, president of Urapakkam panchayat in Guduvanchery.

“We have obtained specific leads from the suspects. We will track down the assailants. Four special teams have been formed,” said an investigating officer.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Urapakkam and Guduvanchery for the second day following the murder. On Wednesday, shops and schools in the town were closed and the bus stop wore a deserted look. Shops on Grand Southern Trunk Road too downed their shutters fearing violence in retaliation for the brutal attack on the ruling party member.

“It was more like a curfew,” said M. Savitha, a resident of the town. She said many customers had to travel to shops in Adhanur for essential commodities.

The town’s railway parking lot also remained shut for a few hours in the morning.
