For 500 school students, who live along the East Coast Road, a trip into the heart of the city on Saturday was seen as a ‘fun excursion' away from their daily routine. At a function organised in T.Nagar, these underprivileged children were provided educational aid by CavinKare, in association with Shriram Foundation's GiveLife.

“We wanted to concentrate on a particular locality and help the community realise the importance of education. The process of selection is based on income backgrounds. We visit schools in the locality and meet the headmasters and ask them to identify students who require such support,” said T.D.Mohan, Joint Managing Director, CavinKare Pvt. Ltd.

Notebooks, bags, stationery items, dictionary, atlas, two sets of uniforms and nutritional breakfast supplements were given to the students. They receive career guidance during the year and their tuition fees are paid directly to the schools. “This initiative really helps the students especially those from slum areas, said G.Lalitha, a teacher from the Government Higher Secondary School in Kannagi Nagar.

“This year, they are giving us an atlas and a dictionary which will be very useful,” said A.Pavithra, a 10th standard student of Government High School, Uthandi. The Managing Trustee of GiveLife and Managing Director of Shriram Life Insurance Company Ltd, Akhila Srinivasan told the students that they should concentrate on studying.

“We will continue our support till you all reach the 12th standard,” she said. R.Gajalakshmi, a teacher at Government High School, Uthandi said, “The educational aid programme trains us in innovative methods to teach the children. We conduct extra classes on a daily basis”. Many students like R.Sundar and S.Vijay from Government Higher Secondary School in Kannagi Nagar were “very happy with the items” they had received. Children from Panchayat Middle School, Neelankarai, Advent Christian High School, Injambakkam and Community Tuition Centre, Karumbakkam, also received the aid.
