Autorickshaw drivers staged a protest in Chepauk on Thursday morning to protest the government’s actions on meter enforcement.

The government should extend the deadline for recalibration of meters, they said. Also, transport department officials should spare autorickshaws that have given meters for recalibration.

“Some autorickshaw drivers have not got rate cards as the original owners are expected to collect them in person. This is impossible as the owners have changed over the years. The vehicle should be transferred in the name of the current owner and the card must be given to him,” said a union representative.

Meanwhile, the transport department has begun night patrolling to crack down on autorickshaws plying without valid documents and meters.

Officials have also started inspecting share autorickshaws including Ape and Tata Magic vehicles in the city.
