When two acclaimed musicians representing very different styles feature in concert together for the first time, the curiosity of listeners simply soars. Thanks to ‘Aikya 2011', carnatic vocalists Sudha Raghunathan and T.M. Krishna treated such curious listeners to an evening of vibrant, engaging music here on Friday.
‘Aikya' is a “musical offering” conceptualised by Global Adjustments, a cross-cultural destination services company.
The funds raised through the concert will support Smrutha Dhvani, an initiative of Interface, an NGO, and Global Adjustments, to care for retiring or retired artists in the field of the performing arts. Select girl students, who are first generation graduates in their families, will also receive assistance to complete their higher education.
The function began with kanjira vidwan Mayavaram Somasundaram and odhuvar Balasubramanian, both senior artists, being honoured. Soon after, Sudha Raghunathan and T.M. Krishna took over.
The elegant stage setting, portraits of legendary musicians that adorned either side of the dais, tasteful lighting, the largely black and white colour theme that artists had chosen for their costumes and the packed Music Academy Hall – set the right tone for the evening.
It was announced that the artists were exploring the concept of “duality” through their rendition. The choice of verses or compositions, the presentation and the exchanges sought to engage with the idea of duality in different aspects of life and music itself.
The Hindu was the media partner for the event.
