The Chennai city traffic police have organised a special drive from November 25 onwards in a bid to reduce the large number of accidents, many fatal, involving two-wheelers.
According to the police, there are approximately 40 lakh vehicles plying on the city’s roads.
Of these, two-wheelers comprise 78 per cent.
So far this year, 2,542 two-wheelers have been involved in accidents and 694 lives have been lost — this includes 682 deaths that occurred as the riders were not wearing helmets.
Last year, as many as 2,715 accidents involved two-wheelers, resulting in 683 deaths — 667 because of helmet-less riding.
During this drive, special attention will be given to addressing the issues of helmet-less riding, double pillion riders, drunken and rash riding. The police will also caution drivers against violating traffic rules, telling them that violations will invite severe penalties.
