An exhibition of photographs highlighting the salient features of elections in the last 60 years in the country, will be held at the regional office of Lalit Kala Akademi here between July 6 and 11.
The photo exhibition, in accordance with the uniform protocol laid down by the Election Commission (EC), is being conducted by the EC in collaboration with the Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP). Apart from 22 panels of photographs available with the Commission, five panels of local character have been chosen for display.
Navin B. Chawla, Chief Election Commissioner, will declare open the exhibition at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Later, he, along with Election Commissioners S.Y. Quraishi and V.S. Sampath will hold a meeting with District Election Officers and senior police officers to review the status of electoral roll preparation, re-organisation of polling stations and coverage of electors with Electors Photo Identity Cards and images in the rolls, according to Naresh Gupta, Chief Electoral Officer.
A 20-minute-long documentary film would also be shown both in Tamil and English. From Wednesday to Sunday, the exhibition would be open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Electoral rolls
On the preparation of electoral rolls for the constituencies of graduates and teachers in the Legislative Council, Mr. Gupta said that November 1, 2010, was the qualifying date. This meant that the draft rolls could be published only after the date. After inviting objections and comments, the final rolls would be out.
Asked whether the by-election could be held for the Poonamalle assembly constituency following the death of the member of the constituency and Congress Legislature Party leader and D. Sudarssanam, Mr. Gupta replied in the negative as, he said, the general elections for the Assembly would have to be held within a year.
To a question on the appointment of his successor in view of the fact that Mr. Gupta would retire on July 31, the CEO said the Election Commission was taking up the matter with the State government.
