The city police have apprehended 21 youth who allegedly took part in illegal bike racing and drove their high-end bikes in a rash manner.

After the road rage on Saturday night and death of a pillion rider on Sunday morning, police intensified the drive against bikers during the night. A special drive was conducted on Sunday by the traffic police along with law and order police personnel to prevent bike racing on Kamarajar Salai and over 250 cases were booked.

In continuation of the drive, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, East, M. Sree Abhinav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Triplicane, G. Suguna Singh with other police personnel mounted a surveillance near the Light House. After midnight, a group of bikers drove their high-end bikes rashly on Kamarajar Salai and some were apprehended at the iron barricades kept on the stretch. While some others managed to give the slip, Mr. Abhinav chased them on Loop Road and caught them. This exercise continued till the early hours of Tuesday.

The bikers who indulged in illegal racing were detained at the Marina police station. “There was dangerous driving by a section of bikers on Kamarajar Salai. The drive is to prevent recurrence of such accidents, and nobody should lose their life. We will continue the drive,” said Mr. Abhinav.
