A bit of fun in school turned fatal for a boy in class VI, after he slid down the banister of a staircase, lost his balance and fell. He suffered a head injury, slipped into a coma and died early on Wednesday morning at a hospital.

Vepery police said the accident happened at the P.T. Lee Chengalvarayan Higher Secondary School on General Collins Road, Vepery where the victim R. Vijay (11) of Periamet, was studying.

“Around 2 p.m. on July 19, Vijay was returning to class after the lunch break. He sat on the banister of a second-floor staircase and tried to slide down. But he slipped and fell on the stairs, badly injuring his leg,” said an officer.

Staff rushed Vijay to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. He was then shifted to other hospitals, and back again to GH. Initially, Vijay responded well to treatment but later slipped into a coma, the officer added.

Around 12.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Vijay died.

Enraged, Vijay’s father Ravi, a waiter, as well as relatives gathered outside the school around 9.30 a.m., blaming the school authorities for having washed their hands off Vijay, after providing initial medical aid.

The crowd dispersed at around 11.30 a.m. after school authorities, with the assistance of local police, pacified the boy’s relatives and promised compensation police added.

Vepery police have registered a case of unnatural death. Vijay’s body was handed over to his family on Wednesday afternoon after a post-mortem examination.
