The long-awaited and much-needed skywalk near Innovative Multiplex on Outer Ring Road (ORR) was inaugurated on Tuesday.

“This is an example and symbol of active community participation and action for the betterment of our neighbourhood,” said a member of Bellandur Jothege, a citizens ’group which worked with the civic body to get the skywalk constructed.

The skywalk was inaugurated by Arvind Limbavali, MLA, Mahadevapura constituency.

Work on other sanctioned skywalks is expected to begin soon. “Work orders for at least four skywalks have already been granted. We recently got no objection certificate from BMRCL to construct a skywalk near Kalamandir,” a BBMP official said.

Residents of localities on ORR, including Mahadevapura and Marathahalli, have been demanding better infrastructure following the death of four pedestrians last year in separate accidents.

As many as eight skywalks had been sanctioned in Bellandur more than a year ago but only one is operational. “The ground-breaking ceremony for six skywalks was done in the first week of December 2018, but construction is yet to begin,” said another member of Bellandur Jothege.
