After eluding the police for week, the man who has allegedly been sneaking into the Maharani College hostel and stealing undergarments has been arrested.

The High Grounds police on Wednesday arrested Abu Talib, 30, a native of Bihar, who has been working as a caretaker for the horses at the race course for the past ten years. They believe Talib is suffering from a mental illness but are yet to get an official medical diagnosis on the matter. He will be sent to NIMHANS for the same.

Following a series of thefts, the hostel administration installed CCTV cameras, which showed a naked man walking around the terrace wearing underclothes belonging to hostelites.

In the last week of February, some hostelites and a security guard tried to catch Talib in the act, but he managed to escape. The management had also filed a complaint with the High Grounds police and submitted the CCTV footage as evidence.

While going through the footage, the police realised that the accused had two hair whorls and began to make enquires asking people in the area if they had seen him.

They stumbled upon Talib after questioning over 50 workers at the race course. When they arrested him on Tuesday, he confessed to the crime.

“He told us that he would wear the clothes and them dump them, and that he felt the need to wear more lingerie. He suffered from sleeplessness and would spend most nights looking for lingerie,” said the police.

The police have arrested the Talib under various sections of the IPC including outraging the modesty of women.
