High-level probe sought into beggar deaths

September 04, 2010 12:39 pm | Updated 12:39 pm IST - Bangalore:

Members of the Bangalore Citizens' Initiative on Friday held a candlelight vigil to pay homage to 290 inmates of the Beggars' Rehabilitation Centre who died there in the last eight months.

The candlelight vigil was staged in front of Gandhi statue on M.G. Road.

The members demanded a high-level probe into the deaths at the centre, which is located at Sumanahalli off Magadi Road. All those responsible for the deaths should be booked for murder, SICHREM project coordinator Prakash Kariappa said. The Central Bureau of Investigation should probe the deaths, and stringent action should be taken against the erring officials, he said.
