Five engineering students have drowned in a stone-quarry pit in Bettahalasur of Chikkajala on Thursday.

One body has been recovered by the Police, while search operations are on to trace the four others, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Vikas Kumar said.

The students, along with three other friends, had gone for swimming in the quarry pit. The three stayed outside the water as they did not know to swim. When one of the boys started to struggle in the water, his friends tried to rescue him but failed to. Shocked by the turn of events, the trio raised an alarm for help and alerted passers-by.

The Chikkajala police rushed to the spot and began search operations with the help of divers. The victims are students of Revana Siddeshwara Engineering College pursuing II-Year, the police said.
