If and when the Centre decides to form a separate State of Telangana, it would be an achievement of the people of the region and no single party can claim credit for it, AP Congress Committee spokesperson Mallu Ravi said.
‘Sentiment strong’
Addressing the media here, he said that the Congress-led UPA Government would be forming a separate State of Telangana honouring the strong sentiment of the people of the region and it would not be for some political gains.
The sentiment for the statehood is so strong that it has actually split the political parties, he pointed out.
He refuted the contention that it would be the achievement of Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
The Congress leaders have been in the forefront of demand for Telangana state and it would be wrong to portray it as a movement of any other party.
If the Congress was looking at some electoral gains from the division of the State, it would have done so long ago, he asserted.
The Congress government in the State was not only continuing the welfare schemes that were started by former chief minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy but also improving them and introducing a number of new welfare schemes, he said and felt that the performance of the Government would help it win the panchayat elections.
PR polls
The results of the panchayat elections would shock other political parties, he said and asserted that the schemes like Amma Hastam have been well received and the villagers are happy with it.
Target 2014
Pointing out that youth have been given positions of responsibility in the party, he said that the party was drawing the youth in large numbers.
