Heaps of garbage, clogged drains a common sight here

Heaps of filth greets one at every nook and cranny of Krantinagar. Lack of hygiene and poor maintenance of roads present a clumsy look as one enters the colony.

Despite the colony being maintained by the GVMC, the lanes, drains, and open areas seem to be untouched for several days. Here, the roads are in a pathetic condition and need a complete makeover. The clogged drains that dot almost every narrow lane yearn for better care. “As part of the sangam initiatives, we have been visiting each household to explain the intricacies of blocked drains to the residents. Unless we come together to take necessary measures to keep the colony clean, the locality continues to suffer from poor maintenance,” says secretary of Krantinagar Grama Seva Sangam K. Govind.

This apart, the residents complain of petrol theft. “Most of the vehicles parked in front of our houses will be emptied overnight. Despite a number of awareness camps hosted by the members of the sangam in association with the Police Department, theft incidents have been on the rise,” laments sangam president P. Ramana.

It is not unusual to see the lanes get chock-a-block with revellers. During special occasions, the residents celebrate on the roads by erecting shamiyanas. “This problem can be solved if we have a community hall in place. Other than hosting functions in an organised manner, the hall will also help us conduct training programmes to empower the colony’s unemployed youth,” adds Mr. Ramana.

The colony residents say that they are dependent on municipal water supply which comes only on alternate days for about 45 minutes. With a fair amount of civic issues that need to be focused, change is all what the people are looking forward to.
