Tension prevailed for a while at Pushpa Hotel Centre in the city on Sunday when CPI(M) and TDP activists clashed during the election to the Krishna-Guntur Teachers’ constituency of the Legislative Council.
Trouble started when CPI(M) activists raised slogans alleging that TDP workers were distributing money to lure voters. They also tried to catch hold of those who allegedly distributed money, resulting in activists of the two parties coming to blows.
On information, the flying squad took three persons, who had reportedly given money to voters, into custody. Showing currency notes that were allegedly distributed to voters, CPI(M) city unit secretary Ch. Babu Rao alleged that the TDP had given Rs. 3,000 to each voter. District Collector and Election Officer Babu A. and City Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao rushed to the spot and enquired about the charges. Mr. Babu said the issue would be taken to the notice of Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal. The arrested were shifted to the Suryaraopet police station.
