: In a twist in the sensational “honour killing” of 17-year-old Shaik Nazma, the case boomeranged on the complainant and Nazma’s boyfriend, K. Deepak. The Nunna police arrested Deepak on Friday.

“We registered cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012, 366 IPC (Kidnap) and 354 IPC (outraging the modesty and sexual harassment) based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s father Mysore Jaan,” said Nunna Circle Inspector Md. Sahera, who is investigating the case under the supervision of city Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang. Nazma’s mother Bibi Jaan, who reportedly confessed to the crime, was also arrested and booked under Section 302 IPC (Murder), the CI told The Hindu . Police registered a case under Section 174 Cr.PC.

Asphyxiation

Forensic experts, who performed autopsy on Nazma’s body, reportedly confirmed that the girl died due to asphyxiation. Nazma was killed for family’s honour allegedly by her mother at her residence in Vambay Colony.

The couple had two daughters – Shaik Salma and Nazma. Salma got married recently and was staying at Narsaraopet in Guntur district, while Nazma was a fifth class dropout.

Mysore Jaan recently migrated to the city. Nazma developed friendship with K. Deepak, a painter of the same colony to which her parents opposed. They chided the girl for moving closely with Deepak, a painter.

The family planned to celebrate Ramzan on a grand scale on July 7, and Salma and her husband were about to celebrate the festival with other family members. But, tragic moments were witnessed in the house with the killing of the girl, said a woman of Vambay Colony.

“On July 5 afternoon, Deepak dropped Nazma on his bike at home. Bibi Jaan, who observed this, pulled up Nazma, but the girl shouted at her mother. Again a heated argument took place between the mother and daughter,” said the neighbours.

Police said that Bibi Jaan sat on Nazma who was fast asleep and smothered the latter to death with a pillow at about 10.30 p.m. At 4 a.m., she engaged an autorickshaw and told the driver that her daughter died of stomach ache.

The girl’s father was not at home when the incident occurred. The accused misled her husband saying that Nazma had not been keeping good health for quite some time. They shifted the body to Jujjuru village in Kanchikacherla mandal in Krishna district and gave the same reason for the death of their daughter.

The investigation officers came to a conclusion that Bibi Jaan eliminated Nazma for honour and misled the family members over the murder. Police registered a case under Section 174 CrPc (Suspicious Death) and later altered the section to Section 302 IPC (Murder).

Ms. Sahera said it was not true that Deepak had blackmailed the family by taking objectionable photographs of Nazma. His mobile phone had been seized to gather clues, the CI said.

“Bibi Jaan alone killed her daughter but we are probing the involvement of any other person in the killing, ” the CI said.
