Thirteen DMK members were arrested at Manapparai when they reportedly attempted to obstruct students from attending classes on Friday, in response to the party's call for State-wide agitation to press for implementation of ‘Samacheer Kalvi'.

Party men carried out their campaign by distributing pamphlets in front of schools and at a few other places, including Lalgudi, Navalpattu, Tiruverambur, Musiri, Thottiyam and Uppiliapuram according to police.

In the city, former MLA Anbil Periyasamy and other party functionaries issued pamphlets to students and parents in front of the Government Syed Murthuza Government Higher Secondary School.

Education department officials said that there was no dent in the attendance of either students or teachers.

Staff Reporter from Nagapattinam adds:

Cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged demonstrations at four locations here demanding immediate implementation of the uniform system of school education in the State. The cadre, condemning the move to stall the implementation of Samacheer Kalvi as one of political vendetta, demanded that students be allowed to continue with the syllabus.

Protests were held at Thagattur in Vedaranyam, Keezhaperumpallam, Nagapattinam, and Manalmedu in Mayiladuthurai. Around 52 protestors were detained by the police in front of Government High School, Manalmedu, and C.S.I.Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Nagapattinam.
