Of the 1.18 lakh strong population of youngsters in the age group of 18-19 in the district, only 40,486 have enrolled themselves in the voters list.
There was a need for all youngsters who attain the age of 18 as on January 1, 2013 to enrol their names in the voters list utilising the summary revision of electoral rolls currently underway in the State, said Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, here on Friday.
Special camps to receive applications for inclusions, deletions and corrections would be held at all polling stations in the district on October 21 and 28, she said, and called upon all eligible voters who have not enrolled their names so far to utilise the opportunity.
All efforts were being made to ensure the electoral rolls were 100 per cent correct, she added. The summary revision of rolls would be carried on till October 31 and applications can be submitted till the end of this month.
Ms.Muralidharan was speaking at a function to mark the distribution of prizes to winners of essay writing and quiz contests for college students organised as part of the awareness drive taken up by the district administration on the summary revision of electoral rolls.
K.Balamurugan, Passport Officer, Tiruchi, who distributed the prizes, emphasised the need for youth to enrol their names in the voters list and discharge their democratic duty. It was also a social obligation for youngsters to exercise their franchise without fail, he said.
A.Monicka of Srimad Andavan Arts College, P.Manikandan of St.Joseph’s College, and M.Mohideen Abdul Khader of Jamal Mohamed College won the top three prizes prize in the essay writing contest while P.Sundar and Sampath Kumar of National College, and N.Anand Kumar and M.Stalin of Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, bagged the first and second prizes respectively in the quiz contest.
Assistant Director of Collegiate Education Mansingh, Chief Educational Officer K.Selvakumar, District Library Officer Sivakumar and other officials were present.
