BSNL contract workers to protest

July 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The casual contract workers of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will hold an indefinite protest fast in front of the Chief General Manager’s office from July 6, putting forward a list of 18 demands.

The demands include an increase in the wages of the contract workers, honouring of the settlement conditions after the protest in August 2013, equal salary for jobs of similar nature, and uniformity in identity cards.

The contract workers had conducted a two-day-long protest in front of the CGM’s office in May. But the management had refused to hold talks with the workers saying that the BSNL Casual Contract Labourer’s Union was not an approved union.

The union had then called for an indefinite strike from June 22, but the management had asked for postponement of the strike. The strike continued nevertheless, but the management has not responded to the workers’ demands.
