Four members of a family at Sengurichi village on Wednesday attempted to commit suicide by consuming poisonous seeds, owing to financial crisis.

S. Malathi (29) of Sengurichi died at the hospital. Her husband Senthil Kumar (34), her daughter Kannika (10) and her son Karthik (7) were under treatment in Dindigul Government Hospital. The condition of Senthil Kumar was very critical, said doctors.

The police said that Senthil Kumar had no funds to complete his house which was under construction. He had already borrowed money for construction of the house. Now, the lenders pressurised him to repay the loan. With no option, the family took this extreme step, they added.

The State’s health helpline 104 provides anti-suicide counselling and Chennai-based Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline is 044-24640050.
