The railways could consider running additional trains to Rameswaram from other parts of the country following increasing demand for more trains, D.P. Pandey, Member (Traffic), Indian Railway, said.

“As some capacity is available for meeting future requirements of trains from all over the country, the railways could consider the demand for additional trains,” he said talking to reporters here on Sunday after inspecting Pamban rail bridge and facilities at Rameswaram railway station.

The railways would examine and provide extra coaches on trains towards Madurai on Sunday evenings to meet the requirements of pilgrims visiting Rameswaram.“There is a demand for extra coaches on some trains… we will examine and provide extra coaches only on Sundays,” he said.

He said ‘Jyothirlinga’ train tour operated by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had completed one trip and the service was very popular. The railway was interested in increasing the service. “The IRCTC will make all arrangements,” he added.
