Unidentified persons broke into the residence of an Airport Officer and decamped with 30 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 40,000 in cash.

The officer, A. Ayub Khan, employed with Airports Authority of India in Madurai, had left for Chennai on Thursday with his family members, leaving his house at Kalai Nagar Extension locked.

On returning home on Sunday, the family was shocked to see the lock of the iron grille gate broken open. The main door was also broken open.

The culprits had decamped with valuables kept in the almirah.

Police said the thieves had not laid their hands on other things at the house. Forensic experts lifted fingerprints from the scene of crime. A sniffer dog was pressed into service.

This is the third house burgled in the newly-added area around Tiruppalai of the city police. Koodal Pudur police are investigating.
