Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan was unusually angry at the council meeting here on Thursday. When the councillors and zone chairmen were raising questions over “lack of adequate civic amenities” in their respective wards, he turned to the officials and asked them to give replies.
Since the replies were not satisfactory to the members, Mr. Kathiravan gave a stern warning to senior-level engineers.
“Work sincerely and you are responsible for the timely completion of civic works. What are you doing? When a councillor is raising questions, you have to be responsible. It looks as if the Mayor and I have to reply for every question,” he said.
When a councillor said he was given wrong information by the officials about pipelines and water supply, Mr. Kathiravan again pulled up the engineers for giving such wrong information.
“Drinking water and drainage facility are our top priorities. If sewage is getting mixed with water, it has to be rectified quickly. Now after the meeting, inspect the spots and complete the works in one week,” he said.
The Commissioner’s tough posture continued with the councillors too. When a zone chairman questioned the transfer of an assistant engineer (AE), he bluntly told him that transfers were administrative matters coming under his purview and the councillors could not raise any objection.
“If an AE is not responding to your calls, bring it to my notice and it will be looked into,” Mr. Kathiravan added.
