Wrong economic policies of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government has affected the people of the country, also leading to increase in prices of essential commodities, T.K. Rangarajan, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, said.

Addressing a protest organised by the Left parties here on Thursday, the Rajya Sabha member said that the Left parties had opposed the new economic policies even at the time of its introduction as it would only serve only a minor section of the people. The liberalised economy had only affected the industries and generated unemployment.

Congress was not the only party to be blamed for the price rise, but also the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which is part of the UPA. “The subsidy for fertilizer has been cut by Rs. 3,000 crore,” he said pointing out that that the Ministry for Fertilizers and Chemicals was headed by a Minister belonging to the DMK.

Mr. Rangarajan said that unemployment rate had gone up and graduates were taking up to white collar crimes for want of good job opportunities. He flayed the State Government for not distributing the free two-acre land as promised by it.
