The Legal Metrology Department has registered criminal cases against two companies manufacturing packaged drinking water on charge of dual pricing.

The companies were charged under Rule 18 (2A) of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules for selling the one-litre bottled water at dual prices, said R. Rammohan, Deputy Controller, Central Zone, Legal Metrology Department.

According to the amended Legal Metrology rules, no identical packages should have different pricing.

In the first case, a one-litre bottle of drinking water was sold at ₹25 in multiplexes located in various towns in Ernakualm while ₹20 was charged for the same bottle in retail outlets.

Mr. Rammohan said a one-litre bottle of another brand was sold at ₹50 in multiplexes in the district while the price fixed for sale through retail outlets was ₹20. A team led by B.S. Jayakumar, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology Department, Ernakulam, registered the case following an inspection.
