It was a proverbial situation of the roaring mountain just giving birth to a mouse.
The District Court Complex, Ernakulam, on Wednesday witnessed dramatic scenes when cops arrested a person for “attempting to hand over a packet” to Ameerul Islam, the accused in the murder of a Dalit woman in Perumbavoor.
The incident happened in the morning when Ameerul was being brought to the District Sessions Court for extension of his remand. While waiting outside the court room, the cops accompanying him noticed a person with a packet in his hands “approach” them.
The police rounded him up only to find four packets of beedi in the cover. As he refused to reply to their queries, the cops took him to the police station for a detailed interrogation.
Soon, TV channels began flashing news of an unidentified person being apprehended for attempting to approach Ameerul. However, the initial enthusiasm was fizzled out by the man’s revelation.
During interrogation, the person, identified as Sunil Kumar of Udayamperoor, told the police that he wanted to “present” the beedi packet to one Dineshan, a suspect in another case, who was slated to be produced in the same court. Meanwhile, Ameerul’s remand term was extended till August 10.
