Reportedly dejected over being blamed by the local people, leaders and the police for disappearance of a minor girl, a teenager ended her life at Gandhinagar, on Wednesday.

The victim Bhagya Sree (17), committed suicide by hanging in her house at Chacha Nehru Nagar in Bansilalpet, on Tuesday night.

A week ago, her elder brother Kishore and another teenaged girl from the locality had gone missing.

Suspicion

Suspecting that Kishore had eloped with the teenager, the latter’s family members had been allegedly pestering Bhagya Sree to reveal where her brother had gone.

‘Mental trauma’

“The girl’s family members, some local leaders and even the police targeted my sister and me subjecting us to mental trauma though we made it clear that we did not know where Kishore had gone,” Srikanth, the victim’s second brother said.

Parents of the three siblings died a few years ago.

The two brothers work in private firms.

On April 22, a teenaged girl from the locality went missing.

Her father Keshava Rao approached the police pointing the needle of suspicion towards Kishore.

“Since then the Gandhinagar police, Keshava Rao, his relatives and two local leaders Y. Srinivas and Y. Suresh had been harassing and threatening us,” Srikanth charged.

Argument

On Tuesday evening, the missing girl’s maternal uncle Sreeram picked up an argument with Bhagya Sree.

He threatened her of dire consequences if she failed to divulge details about Kishore holding her responsible for disappearance of the girl.

An hour after he left, Bhagya Sree hanged herself in the house.

Tension prevailed in the locality when the victim’s relatives and residents of the locality went to the police station urging the officials to take action against Sreeram and others “for driving Bhagya Sree to suicide.”

Arrested

Based on a complaint lodged by Srikanth, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation and arrested Sreeram.

ACP’s assurance

Responding to allegations of police harassment, Chikkadpally Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chandrashekhar Reddy said an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain facts and accordingly action would be taken against policemen if found guilty.
