Continuing to apply pressure on major property tax defaulters, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Friday sought to execute warrants against Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) for accumulated tax dues to the tune of Rs.12.50 crore.
After the civic body staff tried to execute the warrants and seize vehicles and seal some of the official chambers, the hospital senior staff rushed to the GHMC office and paid Rs.50 lakh and requested time for rest of the payment.
According to officials, the Nims had not been paying property tax for the last three years with the total dues including the current and interest amounts piling up to more than Rs.12.50 crore.
“We informed the hospital authorities several times, issued notices and personally contacted them, but in vain. Following this, we wanted to execute the warrants today,” an official said.
A couple of years ago, Nims had sought exemption from property tax but the plea was rejected and after the hospital authorities pointed out some discrepancies in calculation, a joint team of engineers from GHMC and Nims carried out measurements and corrected the same.
