Telangana legislators will donate a month’s remuneration for the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.

Speaking on Armed Forces Flag Day at the Sainik Aramghar Complex on Thursday, Mahabubnagar MLA V. Srinivas Goud said: “To strengthen the Sainik Welfare Board, MLAs will be giving one month’s salary.”

He said that the Telangana government is committed to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families even as he pointed out the land parcels and homes of these personnel are exempt from property tax. He added that several ex-servicemen have been absorbed into the police force and are being given handsome remuneration.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the event, Sainik Welfare Director Col. Ramesh Kumar said that there are around 37,000 ex-servicemen and their families registered. “Apart from these, there are approximately 10,000 others from other cities who would’ve left the armed forces and settled here.”

He said that most of the donations for Sainik Welfare and their families come from government employees, including gazetted and non-gazetted officers.

Two war widows from Mahabubnagar were felicitated on the day. One of the martyred soldiers, A Yadagiri, was awarded the Shourya Chakra.
