Heavy rain lashed the city on Saturday evening, throwing normal life completely out of gear. The rain that began at about 5.30 p.m. battered several parts of the city, leading to falling of trees, water-logging on arterial roads and widespread interruptions in power supply.
People were caught unawares by the cloudburst, as there was hardly any indication of rain during the daytime. The downpour continued for a full one hour. Met Department officials said 4.14 cm of rainfall was recorded at the Begumpet observatory by 8.30 p.m. on Saturday.
Even after the rain subsided, people had to wade through knee-deep water at several places. Normal flow of traffic was affected and the problem worsened following the gathering of crowds under the flyovers at major junctions.
Water stagnation
The GHMC emergency control room received complaints about water stagnation at Ameerpet, Maitrivanam, Indian Airlines Colony, Begumpet, Rajbhavan Road, ESI, NIMS, Lal Bungalow, Punjagutta, Dharam Karan Road, Basheerbagh, Banjara Hills Road No. 12, Lakdikapul, KCP Junction, Himayatnagar, Chapel Road, Tolichowki, Liberty crossroads, Narayanguda, Saifabad, Nimboli Adda, Balkampet, Khairatabad, Bowenpally, and Malakpet.
Trees collapsed under the impact of the rain at some places. There were interruptions in power supply too, but no major breakdowns were reported, said CGM of CPDCL Metro Zone A.G. Sateesh Kumar.
