Fake documents case: bail subject to payment of fine

Justice Raja Elango of Hyderabad High Court on Thursday made it clear that the special court for CBI cases of the city can release on bail the former minister Mohammed Shakeer and former Telugu Desam legislator K. Venkata Prasad and C Uday Kumar, employee of Punjab National Bank, if these convicted persons pay the fine imposed by the trial court in the fake bank documents case dating back to 1996.

The special CBI Court convicted Shakeer by sentencing him to five years in jail and a fine of Rs. 5 lakh. Venkata Prasad was sentenced to seven years in jail and a fine of Rs. 13 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh fine was imposed on Uday Kumar besides sentencing him for imprisonment.

The charge was that they cheated the Punjab National Bank branch in Sanathnagar of the city with fake demand drafts and siphoning off Rs. 8.29 crore. This was proved and they were convicted.
