Smaller districts can garner more funds from the Central government, apart from being convenient for administration, and politics should be kept out while carving out new districts and people’s interests should be on top of the agenda, Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao advised his party’s people’s representatives.
Mr. Rao was speaking to party MPs, MLAs and MCLs at the TRS Legislative Party meeting held to discuss the newly-proposed districts and reorganisation of mandals here on Wednesday. Mr. Rao said while the average population of districts was around 18 lakh in the country the same was 38 lakh in Telangana. There was need to create new districts for administrative convenience apart from benefitting from the Central schemes, most of which were district-specific. The state would stand to lose Central funds if new districts were not created. The Chief Minister asked the party leaders to deliberate upon the Collectors’ proposals on the new districts and suggest changes keeping public interest in view rather than the convenience of political leadership. He suggested that they discuss the proposals thoroughly and submit their views and further discussions could be held on the same. “Talk to the people and come back with the suggestions,” he told party men.
