The Delhi Police headquarters on Indraprastha Marg will be shifted to its new location on Jai Singh Marg in three phases. Under the first phase, officers of the rank of joint commissioner of police and above will start working from the new building from November 1 onwards, said a senior police officer.
On Monday, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik held a meeting with senior police officers at the new HQ to discuss the inauguration function. As per the schedule, the building will be inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah on October 31, which is also Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary.
A senior police officer said that a committee has been set up to plan upgraded security features in the building, which will have modern communication systems to coordinate with any police station or PCR van in the city within seconds.
“The office of the Delhi police commissioner will be on the second floor. There are a total of 17 floors, including two levels of basement parking. We have parking space for over 1,000 vehicles,” said the officer.
In three months
In the first phase, Joint CPs, Special CPs and Commissioners will be shifted from the old building. In the second phase, senior officers from other units will be shifted, and in final phase, DCPs and other officers will be moved. In the next three months, the entire HQ will be shifted.
The new HQ has space for 150 offices as opposed to the current one which has just 80. The existing HQ was shifted from Kashmere Gate to the Public Works Department building at ITO in 1975. Over the period, a number of offices were added but eventually many officers had to be accommodated outside the building at various other locations as there was no scope for further expansion.
“The new building has been constructed with modern facilities like high-tech conference rooms, reception, waiting area, separate entry for visitors, media persons and police officers. The building is vastu-compliant. It will have three-tier security system that will be managed by the Delhi Police,” said the officer.
