Kanhaiya’s security remains a concern

: JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar will be released, at least for the next six months, on Thursday, but will he be able to walk out like a free citizen?

The question remains unanswered as the Delhi Police have not taken a call on whether to provide security cover to Kumar once he is out of jail.

Given the threat that Kumar faces, he has been kept under heavy security.

His release will mean that he will no longer have the security cover.

The Hindu spoke to officers of the South district the Special Cell, which is probing the case now, and the Security Unit. While the first two said they had not seen the court order and whether it mentioned that the Delhi Police will have to provide security to Kumar even after bail, the security wing said its mandate was VIP security for long term and no order for short-term security was issued by higher ups.

During a hearing on his bail plea earlier this week, the Delhi High Court had directed the police to ensure “no one suffers even a scratch” while Kumar is produced in court.

Kanhaiya’s lawyer Vrinda Grover said he would be out by Thursday evening.
