Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday distributed compensation cheques of ₹15 lakh each to the families of Ankit Saxena and Dhruv Tyagi.
Saxena was killed by the family of his girlfriend, including her parents and maternal uncle, on February 1 last year as they were against their interfaith relationship. Tyagi was murdered while allegedly defending his daughter from harassment.
Ankit’s father Yashpal recently addressed the media, saying that he had not received any financial or judicial aid from the Delhi government despite promises made last year. Following this, AAP said that they will look into the issue.
Visited victim’s house
Mr. Sisodia, MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj and MLA Girish Soni visited the victim’s residence on Thursday and gave away the cheque.
The Minister also directed officials to call a meeting to name the road, where Saxena was murdered, after the deceased following a request from his family. “Within the next 10 days, the government will call a meeting of the road naming authority and carry out your wish,” he told the victim’s family.
Yashpal said that Mr. Sisodia visited his house along with Mr. Bharadwaj and handed him a cheque of ₹15 lakh. “They stayed for a few minutes and left thereafter. I’d just say better late than never. The money is a big help but it will not bring back my son,” he said.
Mr. Yashpal said that he will use a part of the money for activities of Ankit Saxena Memorial Trust which will help “people like Ankit”.
Meanwhile, the Minister visited the residence of Tyagi and gave the compensation cheque to his family.
